Privacy Policy

This Privacy Policy explains how the Hanzi Calligraphy mobile application (“Hanzi Calligraphy,” “the app,” “we,” “us,” or “our”) collects, uses, and safeguards your information. By using the app you agree to the practices described here. This policy is always available inside the app (Settings → Legal) and from the app's App Store listing.
1. Information we collect
We collect only what the app needs to create your account and track your learning progress.
Account information
- Email address — used to create and sign in to your account.
- Display name — the name shown on your profile. If you sign in with Apple, this may be prefilled from the name Apple provides on your first sign-in; you can change it at any time.
Learning data
- Lesson progress, scores, attempts, and completion status.
- Experience points (XP), daily streaks, last-active date, and your current HSK level.
- Your writing and display preferences (brush style and size, audio settings, and simplified/traditional character variant).
Subscription information
- Identifiers needed to verify and renew a subscription — an Apple transaction identifier or a Google Play purchase token, the product purchased, and the renewal/expiry date.
2. Information we do not collect
- No analytics, advertising, or crash-reporting SDKs. We do not track you across apps or websites.
- No location, camera, microphone, contacts, or photo-library access.
- No payment card numbers or bank details. All billing is handled by Apple or Google — we never see or store your payment method.
3. How we use your information
- To create your account and authenticate you.
- To save your progress and preferences so they follow you across sessions and devices.
- To provide, verify, and renew subscriptions.
- To operate, maintain, and improve the app.
4. How your information is stored and secured
Your account and learning data are stored using Supabase, our hosting and database provider, acting as a data processor on our behalf. Access is restricted by row-level security so that each user can only read and modify their own data.
On your device, your sign-in session is stored in the operating system’s secure enclave (iOS Keychain / Android Keystore) and is not readable by other apps.
5. Third parties
We share data only with the service providers required to run the app:
- Supabase — hosting, database, and authentication.
- Apple — Sign in with Apple and App Store billing.
- Google — Google sign-in and Google Play billing.
These providers act as our processors: they are contractually required to protect your data to at least the same standard described in this policy, and may use it only to provide services to us — never for their own purposes. We do not use analytics, advertising, or tracking SDKs, we do not track you across other apps or websites, and we do not sell your personal information or share it for advertising.
6. Your rights and choices
You can delete your account at any time from within the app (Profile → Delete Account). This permanently and irreversibly removes your profile, XP, streaks, and all lesson progress. You may also contact us to request access to or correction of your information.
You may withdraw your consent to our processing of your data at any time by deleting your account or by emailing us. Because your account and progress are the app's core function, withdrawing consent (deleting your account) means the app can no longer be used with that account.
Deleting your account does not automatically cancel an active subscription. Because subscriptions are billed by Apple or Google, you must cancel them in your App Store or Google Play account settings.
7. Data retention
We retain your information for as long as your account exists. When you delete your account, your personal data is removed from our systems.
8. Children’s privacy
Hanzi Calligraphy is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us and we will delete it.
9. Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Material changes will be reflected by updating the “Last updated” date above and, where appropriate, through an in-app notice.
